Areas of Expertise:
  • Trauma Sensitive Schools Awareness Trainer
  • Trauma Sensitive Schools Implementation Process
  • School-Community Collaborations
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainer

I am an independent educational leadership consultant and owner of First Light Consulting, LLC and delighted to collaborate with Trauma Sensitive Education, LLC to advance Trauma Sensitive Schools Practices in Wisconsin. I have over forty years of experience in public education as a secondary and university level teacher, a school psychologist and administrator. Since its inception in 1987, I have been a staunch proponent of the Compassion Schools Model (Morrow, 1987). So, it was natural to become actively involved in the advisement, development and delivery of the Wisconsin Trauma Sensitive Schools Initiative through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI) in 2010. Through a small grant provided by the WDPI and Wisconsin Department of Human Services (WDHS) in 2011, I facilitated the first cohort of multiple districts, county human services agencies and community mental health providers from CESA’s 7 & 8 to study and implement trauma sensitive school practices in their organizations. During my tenure as Executive Director of Special Education at CESA 8, I developed and supervised the Brand-New Day Alternative Special Educational Program Model. Through the collaboration of public school, county human services and community mental health providers, we provided trauma sensitive educational and mental health supports for students and families experiencing challenges with mental health. Over the last four years, I have served as an External Coach for seventeen schools in two separate cohorts in the WDPI Trauma Sensitive Schools Program. I am also a trained WDPI Trauma Sensitive Schools Awareness Trainer serving the Wisconsin Department of Justice School Safety Grant recipients. I am also a certified Youth Mental Health First Aid trainer through the National Council for Behavioral Health. Since my 2017 retirement from my full-time service to CESA 8, I have dedicated my efforts to improving mental health support for school age children and their families across the state of Wisconsin and the nation. I am eager to partner with your school or agency to collaboratively work toward that goal.
